Scholarship applications can be extremely complex and confusing. I remember applying for various scholarships; when i was eligible to apply, without any success. I thought it was the fault and mistake of the selection panels that i couldn't obtain any scholarship from the various scholarships i applied for. I thought having most of what they demanded will grant me a scholarship, but i was wrong. It was really frustrating to notice that after all my effort I put into that scholarship application, I couldn't find my name in the list of shortlisted scholarship applicants or in the list of the scholarship winners in the various scholarships i applied for. That was very painful and frustrating.
I later did a research to see and pin point why I never got any scholarship out of the many I applied for and I came out with some answers to my numerous questions. These answers are what we are going to be discoursing as "The 5 Tips on Scholarship Application" here. Without wasting much time, let us now go into the main matter.
Tip 1. Read Every Scholarship Application Carefully.
Every scholarship requires something different from their applicants because no two are the same, so you cannot just fill out one of these scholarship applications and hope that you will get a measure of success. It does not work like that. There will always be something different expected of you, whether there is a word limit on your personal statement or fewer letters of is recommendation; if it's a scholarship which requires a letter of recommendation. If you do not read it carefully and comply with the guidelines then you scholarship application will be discarded straight away. You have to take your time to go through the scholarship application form thoroughly to see what is required of you. You have to follow every instruction given to you if you want your scholarship application to be a success.
Tip 2. Write The Killer Personal Statement or Bio
In knowing more about the applicants, most if not all scholarship applications will require a personal statement from the applicants. So, what is a personal statement? Simple. A personal statement is just a note about you. It's a short description of the applicant. This is very important to these scholarship providers since this is one of the criteria they use to screen out applicants. So, you have to make your personal statement very appealing and short. It should go to the point. Use action phrases to describe who you are and why you think you should be given that scholarship.
Tip 3. Look at What They Want.
You should always look at what the provider of the scholarship is asking and simply give them what they want. Read the eligibility standards of the scholarship provider that you want to apply. Never ever lie on a scholarship application form but tailor your own personality traits to your advantage. If they are looking for someone with character then communicate that in your writing style. If they are looking for integrity then mention an example of it. Always back up what you have to say by just tailoring what you know about yourself to what they are looking for in you!
Tip 4. Conditions: Get The Required Materials/Documents
While I was applying for scholarships, there was never a time I provided the complete documents demanded from me. As at then, I didn't have a school ID card and I think that and many more really affected my chances of getting these scholarships for Nigerians. You should make sure that your documents are complete. Please, in other for you not to be frustrated at the end, always look at the documents or materials needed by the scholarship providers and provide it for them. Prepare the documents that are commonly asked by the scholarship grantee to its applicants. If they want all applicants to have at least a GPA of 3.50, please make sure your GPA is up to 3.50 or above before you think of applying. If your GPA is not up to that, just relax because the right scholarship application for you will surely come.
Tip 5. Read Through The Scholarship Application Form
Never you hit the submit button in any scholarship application form without reading it through first. Make sure that you have said everything that you want to say and in a clear and concise but in a logical way so it is easy to read. Correct any mistake made before submitting the form. I advice that you get a close friend or a family member to also read through the scholarship application form before you finally submit it.
Hope this helps? If you practice all the author as pointed out here, then you are just a step away from getting that scholarship(s) that you want. I never got any scholarship, but that doesn't mean you cannot get yours. I wish you all the best in your next scholarship application.
