UNICAL: SUG Task on Transformational Leadership

The erstwhile Dean, Student Affairs Division, University of Calabar Prof. Joe Asor has tasked the newly elected Students Union Government Executive on Transformational Leadership approach that will cause positive change in individuals and social systems.

Prof. Asor gave the task at a one-day Leadership Workshop organized recently by the Center for Learning and Excellence (CTLE) in collaboration with Students Affairs Division of the University.

He said Transformational Leadership approach leads to positive changes in those who follow which leader identifies the needed change, create a vision to guide the change through inspiration and executes the change with commitment of members of the group.

Prof Joe Asor charged the (SUG) to explore the major leadership qualities which include vision, wisdom, courage, integrity, trustworthiness and humility as these will guide and develop the activities of the Union.

He reminded the Executive of teamwork which is essential for leadership success adding that all work is done by teams, that success in life depends upon the support and help of others.

Also speaking the Dean, Student Affairs Division, Prof Eyong Ubana reiterated the need for the maiden leadership workshop describing it as a necessity to remind the Union of their responsibilities as servant leaders.

He said the workshop was to reawaken the ethics of servant hood, to inform and educate them on how to discharge their official responsibilities.

The Dean promised to subsequently organize the workshop immediately after (SUG) election to close the vacuum which usually exist between both Institution management and the Student Affairs Division.

In a PowerPoint presentation, Prof. Lulu Uwatt in her paper titled Communication Skills and Human Relations from the Standpoint of Critical thinking, Listening and Speaking. stressed the need for additional volume of communication skills and techniques for the purpose of establishing positive governance adding that (Student Union Government Leaders should inculcate appropriate communication skills to enhance their interactive roles as the middle men between the school management and students� body.

Prof Uwatt said from onset communication is given prominence in students Unionism for the purpose of establishing an organized voice for the entire students populace that can effectively articulate the needs, fears, problems, anxiety and aspirations of their members.

She said in a social growing system, communication takes place, striving to carry out the smooth running of the organization, making members feel they are being led rather than being push around.

Also presenting a paper titled �The Principles and Art of Collective Beginning� A Media Consultant Dr Okpo Ojah, said collective bargaining should be predicated upon bargaining relationship to the extent that it is based on give and take, compromise and concession as dictated by the practical significance of time and situation.

He further stressed the need for sides to shift positions during bargaining to arrive at concrete agreement, adding that Union activities should not be underestimated.

The Media Consultant reaffirmed that Unions are basic ingredient in a modern society because Unions fill a void, they help employees satisfy needs and wants that are not being fulfilled by managerial actions and programmes
