NUC Plans Review of Postgraduate Courses

The National Universities Commission says it will embark on an "audit" of students and lecturers of post-graduate studies to sanitize the system.

The NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Julius Okojie, made this known on Tuesday in Abuja at the 25th anniversary of the Committee of Deans of Post-Graduate Schools.

Okojie said the NUC was responsible for ensuring the acceptance of the certificates issued by the country's universities, adding that there was a lot of rot in the system.

He said, "The system is so corrupt. Even those who do not have approval are running Ph.D programmes and there are professors who have never even supervised one student.

"People now go to court because a vice-chancellor does not hail from the locality of the university."

Okojie, who urged the academia to strive towards academic excellence no matter the age and level, said, "It is a world of continuous learning, and so we must be ahead of our students."

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, University of Lagos, Dr. Gabriel Onosode, on the occasion called for an upward review of the nation's education budget to at least 26 per cent.

He suggested that half of the 26 per cent be allocated for the promotion of learning and research at the tertiary level.

Onosode said education should be seen as the sole responsibility of the government.

He called on the Federal Government and other stakeholders to "consider seriously, their positions on post-graduate research and training in Nigerian universities in order to meet the aspirations of the education leaders who dream, pray and work for national development."
